Rs 14,000 crore rail-based mass transit facility, is coming up in Chennai

Chennai Metro on Monday said that tunnelling work on the Chennai Metro Rail project has started on Saturday using two Tunnel Boring Machines. The Rs 14,000 crore rail-based mass transit facility, is coming up in Chennai on two corridors totalling over 45 km.

Chennai Metro awarded the contract in 2011 to Larsen and Toubro (L&T) in joint venture (JV) with Shanghai Urban Construction Group (SUCG) for the design and construction of 3.34 km of twin tunnels and three underground stations.

The JV started work in February 2011 and is expected to complete the tunnels and station construction by April 2015.

Tunnelling has started from the Nehru Park at Chintadripet, where two machines have been installed 20 metres underground. One of the three stations will be at the park, below ground, a box-like structure 228 metre long, Chennai Metro said in a press release.

The other two stations are at Egmore and Kilpauk Medical College. The Nehru Park station will be linked to Kilpauk through a 993-metre-long tunnel to be completed in five months, the release added.

The two tunnelling machines have modern safety systems and precautions. All the buildings in the tunnel route will be monitored round-the- clock when the tunnel boring machines are in operation.

An underground station consists of three levels – the roof, concourse and base. There will be multiple entry and exit in every station, which includes lifts and escalators. The construction site is maintained with international safety standards for both tunneling as well as station construction.
